About

Hi there, my name is Joanne and I’m a ceramicist from Leicester. I work from a small independent studio in Clarendon Park called Eskimo Blue.

My original range references traditional tableware by using flower decals and gold lustre. These are brought to the present by putting them in unconventional places. My aim is to make pieces that can be cherished on a visual and functional level. I make pieces that embrace the making process and invite use.

The collection includes mugs and cups, bowls, jugs, bottles, pots, and jewellery, including brooches, necklaces and earrings. Most pieces are thrown on the potters’ wheel. Handles are made using handmade press moulds made from found handles. These are decorative and by leaving the excess clay on, or showing the seams, it gives an interesting balance between rough and refined. Each piece has a different body, handle and decoration combination. This means that each vessel is unique, inviting each person to find one special to them. Check out the gallery page for examples.

I’m currently working on some new things. I’m using different glazes, decorations, and different clay. There will still be common factors that are found in my work – the mix of rough and refined, the work being both functional and beautiful, as well as many other factors. Most will be the same types of shapes and items, but there may be one or two new things there too! Please check the blog for regular updates on my tests and new items, as well as the gallery for pictures.
